A huge aspect of PR is media relations, and the best way to create those relationships is to be intentional about who you send specific pitches to.
So, do you have a story you want to share (or add to) in mind? Here is what you'll have to do to find the right reporter to take interest:
Research Their Beat, Interests, Angle & Style
What topics do they cover? (e.g., AI, consumer tech, sustainability)
Do they focus on breaking news, trend analysis, or deep investigative pieces?
Are they more inclined toward data-driven stories or human-interest angles?
Do they favor company success stories, tech breakthroughs, or critical industry analysis?
Do they incorporate a lot of expert opinions or data?
Review Their Work & Social Media Activity
Read their latest 5–10 articles to identify common themes, angles, and preferred sources.
Check for recurring topics or references to specific industry trends.
Follow them on X (Twitter), LinkedIn, and other platforms to see what they discuss.
Note what kind of posts they engage with or share.
Review Publication Guidelines & Trends
Understand their outlet’s editorial style, content format, and deadlines.
Identify trending topics in the publication that align with your pitch.
Consider Timing & Relevance
Are they covering a specific trend right now that your pitch can contribute to?
Do they typically cover stories in advance of major industry events or after major announcements?

When you consider all of these factors before reaching out to a journalist, not only could it lead to a mention in an article, but it could also lead to a long-lasting relationship. When journalists and reporters see that you provide value to their stories, they'll remember that and come back to you as a source, over and over again.
So, by now, you should feel well-equipped and ready to reach out.
However, if you're still unsure about the story you want to pitch to the journalist you have in mind, send me a message; I'm always here to help.
